Sunday Salon series

The New York City Reading Series census is an ongoing project to catalogue the contemporary literary scene. Any reading series curator in the New York area can take the survey here.

What is the name of the series, and what is the significance or meaning of the series name?
Sunday Salon was inspired by the French literary salons.

Who founded the series, and who runs it now?
I (Nita Noveno) founded the series and have run it over the years with a team of wonderful writers/organizers.

What genres or mediums does the series include?
Prose (fiction & nonfiction) and poetry.

What is the format of the series?
Usually it’s four writers who read for 15 minutes. Sometimes we have special events with more readers.

Where does the series take place?
At Jimmys no. 43, a bar in the East Village in NYC.

When and how often is the series performed (and is it seasonal)?
The readings are (usually) every third Sunday of the month from September to June.

How long has the series been active?
The series is in its 13th year!

Where can people find information about series on the web?
Here at: sundaysalon.com

Do you take submissions, solicit material, or a combination?
For the readings, we consider writers who’ve contacted us through the website and we also connect with writers we’ve heard or read about.

Did you set out with specific goals when the series was launched and have they changed over time?
The primary goal was/is to connect and create a literary community and we continue to do this while striving to represent a diverse and changing literary landscape. Another goal: have fun!

What distinguishes the series from others?
We’ve got sister series in Chicago and Florida and had one for two years in Nairobi. I think the idea of running a series (whether it’s a Sunday Salon or not) has been an inspiration and a lesson in community.

The next Sunday Salon is scheduled for Sunday, September 20th, 2015 at Jimmy’s No. 43, at 7 p.m., and will feature Syreeta McFadden, Edward Mullany, Vu Tran, and Kirstin Valdez Quade.
