Tobias Carroll has been very busy. In August, he released a short story collection, Transitory. Last week he launched his debut novel, Reel. Carroll was at Community Bookstore in Park Slope to discuss the novel with Jason Diamond. The two are close friends and together they built literary web magazine Vol 1 Brooklyn into a powerhouse of culture.

When you want to read your fiction after just publishing a book, but there just doesn’t seem to be a good fit for you in your state, what do you do?
Well, Nicole Haroutunian, an English Kills Review contributor, joined forces with Apryl Lee to create their own series in Montclair, New Jersey. Now, four times a year, The Halfway There Reading Series combines community and the arts to give both emerging and well-established authors a platform for their work without a hike into the city.
Luke Goebel’s debut novel, Fourteen Stories, None of Them Are Yours, actually only contains thirteen stories. A poetic explanation might simply be that the fourteenth story is the one created when the individual parts come together as a amalgamated narrative, but Goebel confesses that he just “fucked up.” He liked the mistake though, and kept the title, explaining the title to Tobias Carroll, editor of Vol 1 Brooklyn. Greenlight Bookstore hosted the pair, in conjunction with Franklin Park Reading Series’s curator Penina Roth, on Monday for a reading and discussion.
